Search Engines

Databases, Directories and Search Engines

Databases

Generally a collections of journal and magazine articles.  Each record contains the information in the database for individual items and provides a brief description of that item.

Searching through a database gives searchers more relevant results.

The Department of Public Instruction currently contracts with eight vendors (EBSCO, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., Gale/Cengage Learning, Heritage Microfilm, Inc., LearningExpress, LLC, ProQuest, TeachingBooks.net, LLC and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association) to provide access to a large volume of full-text information. Users can search approximately 20,000 full-text magazines, journals, newspapers, reference materials and other specialized information sources. Included are over 8,000 full text magazines and journals, over 1,500 newspapers and newswires, and approximately 6,800 full text books.

Directories

A Web directory organizes Web sites by subject, and is usually maintained by humans instead of software. The searcher looks at sites organized in a series of categories and menus. These collections of links are usually much smaller than search engines' databases, since the sites are looked at by human eyes instead of by spiders. ( , About.com accessessed 1/8/13)
