DHS students win big at math competition

Winning streak continues

PLATTEVILLE-Dodgeville High School student competitors brought home the gold, silver and bronze metals once again from

the annual Southwest Conference (SWC) Math contest held March 7.

DHS principal Dr. Jeff Athey was exultant about the news.  “I was very proud of the students who participated.”

Twelve of the twenty students received medals:  three won gold medals, three silver and six bronze.

“It was nice to see Dodgeville come home with more medals than any of the other conference schools,” says math teacher Jeff Bradley.

Each of the competitors were placed in one of four divisions based on their current math class enrollment.

Although one purpose of the contest is to stimulate mathematical interest at the high school level, most of the DHS students didn’t need the extra incentive .

“These students [already] have a high interest in Math and strive to do well,” says geometry teacher Gina Weier.

“I enjoy solving problems,” said Jet V.  That sentiment was echoed by Melissa S. “I treat every problem like a puzzle and its really cool when I put it together.”

Teachers give the students practice tests in order to prepare but the questions challenge them none the less.  “I was good at

the story problems, the others were really hard,” said Melissa S.

For a number of the students this is not the first time they have experienced success in competitions.  “My parents were happy, but they are used to it,” said Hailey J. who won a silver medal.

DHS has participated in the SWC Mathematics Contest every year for more than twenty years and plans are to continue the tradition.

"I’ll do it again next year" said Jet V.

The math department continues to participate as they see it as important in a broader context.

“These kids are tomorrow’s problem solvers”, said Bradley.

The following students participated in the competition*:  Kory B. (G), Tyler C.(B), Graham D. (B), Ellie D.,

Ethan E. (B), Eliza G.(S), Matt H., Joscelyn H., Hailey J.(S), Ben L. (B), Levi N. (S), Jonah N., Sage S., Melissa S. (B), Travis S. (B), Morgan S. (G), Brendon V., Ike V.,  Jet V.(G), Dani W.
