DES Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

The Cat in the Hat made a special guest appearance at DES in honor of Dr. Suess' birthday on March 2. Second graders presented him with a "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" birthday cake that was specially designed by Mrs. Narveson.

During the Cat in the Hat's visit to DES, he read stories to the children and passed out bookmarks, pins, and coloring pages to remind them of the joy of reading. He especially enjoyed going to recess with them, and he tried to shake the hand of as many children as possible. He was VERY impressed with all the reading going on at DES!

Classes Research at the Library

With the help of library staff working in collaboration with teachers at every grade level, students discover the joy of researching! The students discover that researching and notetaking are hard work. But they also discover that finding information and constructing personal meaning from it can be fun. In fact, it makes them feel like an expert on their topic! Curriculum-integrated projects help students become lifelong readers, learners, technology and and library users!

DES Parents Group Hosts Read-In
To celebrate School Library Month and TV Turn Off Week, we have a Family Read-In every year. Guest readers from our community are invited to sit in the rocking chair and read stories to a packed audience.

Families take a book off the shelf, and read it together during our Family Read-In. The DES Parents' Group provides free snacks and a free paperback book for every child who attends.

Students are invited to wear their pajamas so they will be ready for bed after hearing all these bedtime stories. There are many book-related activities going on during the evening. Guest readers in the past include local people from the police and fire departments, as well as post office employees, bus drivers, the county judge, the school superintendent and principal, teachers, veterinarians, doctors, students, speakers of a foreign language, as well as many other famous people around the Dodgeville community. Turn the TV off, and walk to our school library with your family... Enjoy an evening that promotes books, reading, and literacy!!
